Orb Podcast 083: Jay Glass Dubs

The Athens-based composer and sound artist Dimitris Papadatos aka Jay Glass Dubs stands at the forefront of experimental dub electronics. His themes revolve around spirituality, originality, and transformation, presenting an ongoing, in-depth exercise through specific sonic patterns. His extensive discography, including ambient and improvisational pieces behind different aliases, even through his many self-released albums, provided the necessary space and mixture for this specific project to make its debut in 2015. Nine years later, his latest release is an LP on Sundial titled Resurgence, the tracks of which were written and produced from 2016 to 2019.

For this occasion, Jay Glass Dubs adorns the aforementioned release with a new, a little more than an hour-and-a-half, selection for the Orb Podcast series. This 83rd entry brims for its first part with a slow-burning percussion, tempered with mystical reciting, reggae turnarounds, and saxophonic melodies progressing towards parametric synth touches and pumped-up tempo. For the second half, the tables turn to a more vigorous drum & bass stance, spilling indirect warehouse warps in an occasional drumming complexity. The mood change to this evocative, fast-paced groove with its well-shaped edges and shaking rhythmicality intentionally incites a liberation from the previous immersive soundscape. This setting from Jay Glass Dubs focuses on and outlines constitutive parts of his project, delightfully demonstrating their smooth interconnectedness.
